Robert Bean, R.E.T. (Registered Engineering Technologist)

Robert Bean, R.E.T., is a graduate of the Building Construction Engineering Program from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, Alberta School of Drafting and the Business Owner Transition Program, University of Calgary.

His articles on environmental ergonomics and HVAC mechanics have been published in HPAC Canada, ASHRAE Journal, theNEWS, HVAC-Talk, homeBuilderCanada, PM Magazine, and RPA Report. He is the author/instructor for peer-reviewed courses including the Residential Radiant Hydronics Design Certification Course delivered by HRAI of Canada and ASHRAE's professional development short course on the Fundamentals
of Panel Heating and Cooling.

Robert is a member of the Alberta Society of Engineering Technologist, American Institute of Architects, American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers, Heating Refrigeration Air Conditioning Institute of Canada, Hydronics Marketing Group and a past board member and a founding father of the Alberta Hydronics Advisory Council.

He was the first chairman of the Foothills Conference, a member of the Radiant Panel Association and past member of the technical committee on floor heating standards and current secretary of the snow/ice melting guidelines action group.

Robert currently serves as the coordinator for the ASHRAE Learning Institute and Education Sub Committee Chairman for Technical Committee 6.5, Radiant and In-space Convective Heating and Cooling and is an acting technical and business liaison between US and Canadian Educational Institutes, Industry Associations, and Committees and serves as a technical resource to the National Hydronics Design Standards committee for CSA B214 Installation Code for Hydronic Heating Systems. He is the developer and moderator for www.healthyheating.com a not for profit web site on interior environmental ergonomics. He provides professional business and technical presentations and services related to indoor environmental quality and radiant based HVAC systems.

Mr. Buchan is a building science professional and mechanical engineer with 28 years experience investigating and solving problems with buildings. James (Jim) Davidson received his law degree from Queen's University in 1982. He was called to the Bar in 1984, and is today a partner at Nelligan O'Brien Payne and head of the firm's condominium law group.

Jim is a past director of the National Board of the Canadian Condominium Institute (CCI) and a former director of the Ottawa Chapter of CCI. He served on the editorial board for the Condominium Law Letter. He was the Ottawa representative on the CCI/ACMO Joint Legislative Review Committee (dealing with the new Condominium Act). Jim is a panel member of CDRC (the Condominium Dispute Resolution Centre). He has lectured extensively on condominium law for many years. This has included lectures at events organized by CCI, ACMO, The Law Society of Upper Canada, The Ontario Bar Admission Course, the Canadian Bar Association and various organizations of insurance adjusters. Jim has been the condominium law lecturer at Ottawa 's Bar Admission Course for the past several years.

Alvin Epp : Vice-President, CASH Society

Alvin has a variety of experience in the construction industry. He started in the late 1970's working in Calgary, building high-rise apartments and commercial buildings. After a few years of concrete work he moved into
the housing market - primarily involving himself in home renovations.
In 1996 he formed Kelrek Services (www.kelrek.com) which focuses on home renovation and multi-family housing repairs.

Over the past number of years he has worked on numerous defective
multi-family dwellings leading him to become involved with the BC
Building Envelope Council. He is committed to continued education in the building science industry to improve the health and sustainability of family homes, whether they be single/detached or multi-family residences.

Along with being committed to Canadians for Properly Built Homes, Alvin is a Vice President with Consumer Advocacy and Support for Homeowners Society (C.A.S.H. ), an active member in the Greater Vancouver Home Builders Association Renovation Council, as well as an active member of the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce.

John Grasty:  REALTOR®

John is well respected throughout Metro Vancouver for his leadership and continuing advocacy on behalf of homeowners. He co-founded the Coalition of Leaky Condo Owners in 1999, and was a Past-President of the Consumer Advocacy and Support for Homeowners (CASH) Society before its dissolution in 2011.

After a career in industry where defects are measured in parts per million, John is disturbed that rather than trying to figure out how to consistently build a quality home for Canadians, the home building industry and warranty insurance providers actively lobbied senior government to limit their liability even further.

John's lifelong pastime has been volunteering, and since moving to BC in 1989 he has remained active in the community, currently being appointed to the Arts and Culture Committee for the City of Port Moody, where he has also served on Economic Development; Centennial Steering, and the Parks Recreation Commission.

Dr. Martin L. Martens : Assistant Professor, Concordia University

Dr. Martin L. Martens is an Assistant Professor of Management at the John Molson School of Business at Concordia University in Montreal. He currently has an SSHRC research grant to investigate How key organizations in the BC housing industry negotiated, shaped, and influenced the social dialogue surrounding the the leaky condo social issue in British Columbia and how the issue affected the industry's identity and image. Dr. Martens earned his PhD in 2002 at the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia. In addition to his research, he currently teaches strategy and consulting courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels at JMSB.

Peter McBride : Fire Safety Officer

Peter McBride has been a member of the fire services since 1988 and has been serving in the capacity of Incident Safety Officer since 1997. As a fire service officer focused on the safety of firefighters, he has an extensive understanding of fire, its causes and consequences in the built environment.

Peter is a student of building systems, and as a homeowner, is an advocate for all owners in wanting to ensure building systems are properly designed, installed and serviced by the home building industry.

Neil McManus, CIH, ROH

Neil McManus, with NorthWest Occupational Health and Safety in North Vancouver (www.nwohs.com), is a practicing industrial hygienist with over 25 years of broad-spectrum experience "in the trenches" with workers, and their supervisors and management. He has earned designations in the U.S. and Canada as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), a Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH), and Certified Safety Professional (CSP). Mr. McManus is an active volunteer in committees in the health and safety profession and in the local community. He has chaired the Computer Applications Committee and Confined Space Committee of the American Industrial Hygiene Association and is the Chair of the ANSI Z9.9 Committee on Portable Ventilation Systems responsible for creating an American National Standard on this subject.He has made numerous presentations to professional and community groups. Mr. McManus is a Fellow of the American Industrial Hygiene Association, the first non U.S. national to be elected to this honor.

He has written numerous articles and short publications, and is the author of  leading-edge publications in the health and safety profession, including Safety and Health in Confined Spaces , Portable Ventilation Systems Handbook , The Confined Space Training Program , and is co-author of The Hazcom Training Program and The WHMIS Training Program.

Mr. McManus also is an educator. He began his career as a high school teacher and has considerable experience in adult education. He has taught courses on workplace air monitoring, noise, industrial hygiene, occupational health and safety, and toxicology. He has a special interest in confined spaces, portable ventilation and hazard communication, and has written articles, and created and presented workshops and Professional Development Courses on these subjects. He has first-hand experience with many groups on the shop floor and knows full-well the challenges and difficulties in communicating complex concepts in the health and safety arena to nontechnical audiences.

Mr.McManus investigated his first microbiological issue in 1986 and has had increasing involvement in microbiological issues in buildings since 1990. He was an invited speaker on health issues to occupants and remediation workers at the Barrett Commission on leaky condominiums in Vancouver and has contributed to the efforts of the Coalition of Leaky Condo Owners (COLCO) and the Consumer Advocacy and Support for Homeowners (CASH) Society. He has had a considerable experience with microbiological issues in houses resulting from design, construction, and maintenance deficiencies through involvement with the building restoration industry. He investigated the first grow-bust houses in Chilliwack , Abbotsford and North Vancouver covered under  municipal bylaws on this issue, and created a protocol for ensuring that the restored buildings remain an asset to the housing stock in these communities.

Mr. McManus has an M.Sc. in radiation biology and an M.Eng. in occupational health and safety engineering, as well as a B.Sc. in chemistry and a B.Ed. specializing in chemistry and biology, all from the University of Toronto.

Liza Medek : Architect

Ms. Medek is licensed in Ontario and Quebec and has practiced in Montreal, Toronto, Dusseldorf, Hannover and Ottawa. She has a B. Sc. Arch., B. Arch. (Professional Degree) and M. Arch. - McGill University.

She sits on the Advisory Committee for Algonquin College's Architectural Technology Program, the Advisory Council for the City of Ottawa's Doors Open, is Chairman of the OAA’s Honours and Awards Task Group and Mentor/Guest Critic for the Syllabus Ottawa studio. Some of her previous appointments include:

Dr. John Molot : Environmental Medicine Expert

Dr. John Molot has been practicing Environmental Medicine in Ottawa , Ontario , since 1980 and has attended hundreds of hours of Continuing Medical Education (CME) accredited courses in the USA . He has assessed and treated more than 7,000 patients suffering from illnesses such as chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, certain types of cancers, sick building syndrome and environmentally triggered illnesses, including those with food and multiple chemical sensitivities.

Dr. Molot is a founding member of the Canadian Society for Environmental Medicine (CSEM) and was the chief author of the position paper of the Canadian Society for Environmental Medicine (1989). He is on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine. Since 1994, he has been a member of the Environmental Health Committee of the Ontario College of Family Physicians (OCFP), and he represented the Canadian College of Family Physicians working with Health Canada to reduce the use of plastics in medical devices.

He has facilitated and presented workshops as a peer presenter for the OCFP on Environmental Health in Family Medicine, including “How to Take an Environmental History”, “Sick Building Syndrome”, “Multiple Chemical Sensitivities”, “Chronic Fatigue Syndrome” and “Pesticides”.

Furthermore, Dr. Molot has participated as the medical advisor in several projects including the Material Emission Standards Task Force (Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation), Environmental Sensitivities in the Workplace and Sick Building Syndrome pilot projects (Public Works Canada), and the National Film Board of Canada Prospective in Science Film entitled “Air”.

He has also been an invited participant in two Environmental Sensitivities Workshops (Laboratory Centre for Disease Control, Health Canada). In 1999, as a consultant for Health Protection Branch, Health Canada, Dr. Molot co-authored a paper reviewing linkages between emerging and future technologies in buildings and housing over the next 20 years and potential impact on human health. (“Review on the Specifications of Indoor Linkages”).

Dr. Molot also is a member of the Clinical Research Advisory Board for Environmental Medicine for the Ontario Ministry of Health, has participated in focus groups for the Environmental Research Clinic at Sunnybrook and Women's College Hospital in Toronto and at the Department of Public Health, University of Toronto. As well, he has appeared numerous times as an expert witness in court.

In 2001, Dr. Molot received the CSEM John MacLennan Award “In Recognition of Outstanding Contribution to Environmental Medicine in Canada” and in 2003, he received a Fellowship from the OCFP for his “Contribution to the Enhancement of Medicine”.
