Tarion Warranty Board to have Consumer Representation
(formerly Ontario's New Home Warranty Program)

Consumer minister to appoint four (consumer representatives).  OHBA no longer has complete control of board.

A sign hangs in the constituency office of Ontario's new consumer minister Jim Watson. It reads, "How many people have we helped today?" That seems to be his motto. "I want to help the consumer," ...

His actions echo the sentiment of the sign. For the first time in the history of Ontario's home warranty program, Watson said, the Ontario Home Builders' Association will not have complete control over the composition of the board of the Tarion Warranty Corp. (formerly the Ontario New Home Warranty Program)...

Canadians for Properly Built Homes sees this move by Mr. Watson as a very positive one with respect to consumer representation at Tarion, something that was sadly missing in past.

This action by Minister Watson came as a direct result of pleas from disappointed homeowners in one Ottawa housing development. As well, the community association for this new development got involved. This community association is well organized to carry out its objectives, which include protecting the interests of the community and communicating issues concerning the development. These combined actions have yielded positive results for future homeowners..

Only with the perseverance of homeowners and organizations such as this community association and CPBH,  will governments at all levels begin to take notice that homeowners are no longer willing to accept substandard homes.  This important change by Minister Watson demonstrates that our voices are beginning to be heard and governments are taking notice.

Thank you, Minister Watson!
