Dr. Karen Somerville co-founded Canadians for Properly Built Homes after experiencing a newly built home crisis in Ottawa in 2000. More than 50 building code violations identified by experts, a lawsuit, a court loss and approximately $400,000 in out-of-pocket costs later, she and her husband refused to walk away.

Instead, she spent the next 22 years hearing from thousands of Canadians in similar situations, engaging with politicians and officials at every level of government, and building the evidence base that this book is built on.
