Director, Canadians for Properly Built Homes

Mary McAllister-Diks joined Canadians for Properly Built Homes (CPBH) in 2006, shortly after her and her husband’s 2 1/2 year battle with their builder, the Ontario New Home Warranty Program (now Tarion) and the Licence Appeal Tribunal (LAT).  They took possession of their dream home in 2001 and quickly discovered a myriad of construction defects, including over a dozen Ontario Building Code violations.

Mary’s experience as an Insurance Broker helped in navigating the Ontario New Home Warranty Plan Act (ONHWPA) as well as the rules and regulations of the LAT. In the end, Mary and her husband appeared in front of the LAT on 3 separate occasions and received the maximum payable under the ONHWA. Their builder’s licence was revoked by Tarion in December 2005.

Mary worked in the Insurance Industry for 15 years. She was a Registered Insurance Broker (RIBO) and business owner before deciding to stay home to raise her two children. Mary’s professional strengths include organizational skills, risk management and customer service.

Additionally, Mary has been an active community volunteer with the Ottawa Carleton District School Board and within minor hockey; Ice Scheduler, Director of Risk and Safety, Treasurer, Team Manager, Tournament Co-Ordinator, Merchandise and Fund Raising.

As noted by Mary: “While going through our ordeal, I was continuously looking for other families and/or organizations that would understand and help guide me through this exhausting process.  It wasn’t until after our grueling ordeal that I discovered Canadians for Properly Built Homes (CPBH). When I familiarized myself about CPBH, I instantly realized their value to consumers. My hope is that by working with CPBH, I can help others to avoid our disastrous experience.”
